Saul bass has made many title sequences for many films. he seems to like the use of lines in hes work and bold block colours and pictures and i personally think that it is effective and its different to other graphic designers.

Around the world in 80 days all the colours are block colours and bold hes animation drawings are almost childlike in this sequence very simple but effective like something out of a cartoon. in this particular sequence he seems to be using the pictures of playing cards and makes them come to life.

This title sequence was made in 1956 and for that era the title sequene isn't old looking or dosent look like it was made asearly as that.

the music he uses in most of hes work seems to be classical mixed with jazz almost like carnival music i personaly like the music he uses simply because it goes really well with the animation and the speed of the animation and the song.

Saul bass uses block shapes in this particular title sequence like triangles and circles for faces and buildings and i think that works well with the music the animation of it all.

Saul uses black and white image on colours like the knights on horses. what i have also noticed that hes work is quite repetitive the music is similar in most title sequence's he has done and some of hes animation looks similar

this has to be one of the best title sequences he has done

anatomy of a murder

in this title sequence saul bass uses black and grey for the colour scheme,I think this goes well with the title.

Bass does normally use lines in hes sequences and here he has used them.The lines and illistrations are silhouette like a stencil or a puzzle even?

this particular title sequence i find really quite boring its not as jazzy or as intruiging as the others he has made.

the music he uses is 1960s verry suttle and bland just so it fits with the title of the film anatomy of a murder so he uses dark colours and dull music to get you to know what the film may be like, it dosent give much about the film so there is no give aways to spoil it for the viewers.

he uses verry simple animation in this sequence just straight movement up and down side and side no loops no curves.

i personally dont like this one i thinks its boring and to the title sequences he normally does its bland and dull no colour no catchy tune or no bright colours so to me its really boring but on the other hand i supose hes showing hes talents that he can do whatever he wants and be good at it to fit the film hes making it for.

i think saul bass is a great graphics designer and he's work is great he was a good graphic designer and i think now days title sequences should be more on the lines of saul bass's work.

introduction to A/S media coursework brief

The aim of my project is to plan and shoot an opening title sequence to a fiction film, my chosen genre is a thriller. we have 3 weeks to plan this and we will be shooting sometime in January.

i have chosen to work with Chris Johnson in this project

the opening title sequence has to be about 2-3 minutes long.

in class we watched a various number of openings my favourite one was Se7en by David Fincher. we found this very clever and inspiring because of the typography and lighting and framing. my favourite part of this is the cutting of the fingertips so he don't leave no fingerprints,i think this is really clever .

When me and Chris come to shoot our opening we will consider the way Fincher uses confined space in the frame and the scratchy writing and images that appear.This film is not the reason that me and Chris chose a thriller,both me and Chris chose a thriller from the beginning before we knew what we had to do.

At this moment we have no strong ideas but we have some locations in mind like where i live in thamesmead because there's loads of unwanted land that is deserted, by the Thames because i live again near it and we can get extremely close to the water,these are just ideas that we have come up with to start.

02-01-09.

We have both now decided that we will not shoot it at the Thames but we will be shooting it in school because we have the facilities e.g. we need a dark room. We have been told that we can use a big store cupboard for our title sequence that will be ideal because it has no windows so we can light it precisely and we can take advantage of the darkness.

this is our continuity piece,we had to include openin and shutting a door and a brief conversation so we chose a prison visit. tha camera work was done by chris johnson, the prisoner was played by me, lucy hart and the visitor was played by emily peachy.and lastly the prison guard was played by shazna khalique. this took us about 1hour to shoot and about 1hour to edit.
